What city in either Canada or the US has the best mass-transit (trains, buses etc.)?

I am thinking about relocating from my current metro-area to another metro area. Though I don't own a vehicle and don't really want to own a vehicle so I would like to move to a city with good public transit. The term best would mean the most comprehensive coverage, and timely. I also prefer trains to buses, but that is more a style preference than deal breaker.

LA is definitely NOT your city!
I ran into a man who lived in Boston who did not own a car, and it's very common to live in New York (with the amazing subway system) and not own a car. The Bay Area (San Francisco, Berkley) has BART, so although they may not have "The Best" public transportation system, they have a good one-and within San Francisco you definitely don't need a vehicle.

Chicago has a 24 hour public transportation system, but I have no personal experience using it.

I've been looking around many places and it seems like there are a few cities that are consensus selections, though I'm guessing these people have only considered US cities. Among the cities are New York, Portland (Oregon), Washington DC, Chicago and San Francisco. I hope this helps. I personally have had great experiences in NY and Chicago and mixed experiences with public transit in San Francisco.

New York and Toronto of the ones I have seen. Toronto also has a great network of underground tunnels so you can walk around in the winter without freezing. New York without a car is very easy.
