What are the options for traveling between Sacramento, CA and San Jose, CA -- besides driving/carpooling?
I'm looking for public transportation options, not chartered jets.. :)

If you like taking the train, Amtrak offers roundtrip service from Sacramento to San Jose, CA. It looks like the trip will take about 3 hours each way, and according to this, it looks like it's only about $31 each way - not too bad:

If you fill out the information on the Greyhound Bus website, it looks like you can get a round trip ticket for only about $50:

Hope this helps!

Alaska Airlines fly direct to San Jose, CA. If you book ahead, you may get some good rates (but not as low as the train).
Hitchhiking is a potential, but unpleasant method. Flying commercial aircraft will be expensive, but Alaskan Airlines does offer direct flights between Sacramento and San Jose. One other, more potential solution, is to travel by train. Amtrak offers direct train service on their Coast Starlight and Capitol Corridor routes.
I can tell you personally that the best options from the point of cost and convenience will be in the following order (in descending pleasantness): drive/carpool, train, commercial air. The total travel time will be longer by train, and even longer by plane (if you include waiting time). The cost may be similar by train and car, but the cost of airfare will certainly be steep for only 120 miles.
