Were you surprised that GM dropped the Pontiac brand?

GM will cut 23,000 jobs by 2011 and slash 40% of its dealer networks?

How will dealers recover their investment in Pontaic?

What penalties will GM have to pay to dealer for discontinuing the Pontiac brand?

Has GM made a deal to exchange another brand for the Pontiac brand with dealers?

Not at all.

These companies have been wildly mismanaged and the only way for them to survive is to focus. They need to reduce the number of brands and models to the point at which they make cars that are so good folks tell their friends they have no choice but to buy one.

They have massive brand issues, and cutting their weakest brands and focusing on the winners is a very solid strategy.

GM needs to have cars like the Toyota Prius, BMW, Mini Cooper and Tesla Roadster--cars folks tell their friends about. Cars that people fall in love with and are loyal to.

Who is loyal to a Pontiac?

That being said, I did like the Pontiac Solstice. Very Cute.... like mini version of my Corvette! :-)

Asker's Rating:
• If you had a Pontiac would you trade it in for a Toyota, after hearing the Pontiac dropping the brand?

Would you act today and try to capture as much value as possible out of the vehicle?

Would you keep the car and pay it off and save money for maintenance?

Do you think Pontiacs high end vehicles will become collector vehicles?

And there was a while when Pontiacs were just crappy. My mom had a Lumina minivan in the 90s. It was quite possibly the worst car ever. It had all sorts of weird electrical issues. To say the least, we've switched to Asian cars and haven't had a problem since.

Well, I can't answer all your little sub questions, but the main one:

Yes, very surprised. I loved the Pontiac cars. All of my vechiles have been Grand Ams or (currently) a Vibe. Loved them, they were all great and reliable.

I worry about my Vibe now though. I purchased an extended warranty for it when I bought it new. Hopefully, GM dealers will continue to honor it.

On the upside, maybe now it will be worth more!

Do you believe Pontiac resale value was affected by the move?

I think people will still find value in driving a used Pontiac.

They might have a hard time moving a few cars, some people aren't going to think "money problems" for the brand drop, they're going to think "these are the crap cars GM didn't want to support anymore."

Of course, people who were fans of the brand may or may not be willing to pay more for them. I wouldn't, I will probably switch to another brand when I get my next car. Probably not a GM brand either. I didn't care for any of their other lines.

In my opinion, they would've been better off dropping one of their luxury lines, like Oldsmobile and pumped funding into Pontiac, the brand with all the mid price range vechiles.

People aren't wanting to shell out money for expensive cars right now. They want reliable and affordable.

Bad move on GM's part. I think.
