Flights are delayed/cancelled for many reasons other than weather. LAX is one of the busiest airports and have equipment flying in and out all the time. If there are problems on the other end (your destination) or from other locations due to weather, that can also mess up where equipment goes and who has what. It gets messy fast.

Waiting for our delayed/cancelled flight...how can I fly out of JFK in three feet of snow but can't fly out of LAX on a perfect day?
