If it's a new car you seek, you're in luck. It's a buyer's market out there. Without knowing your needs, it's hard to give one specific car you should look into. Instead, I'll list what I think are good cars at good prices. And most of these are even better bargains if you can find a 3-4 year-old used model.
1. Honda Civic - There's a reason is it's consistently one of the best selling cars. The Civic has quality, reliability, comfort and affordability. Good gas mileage on the gasoline model, and there's a hybrid if you can afford it.
2. Volkswagen Rabbit - Nice hatchback that's sportier to drive than most econocars. VW's interiors are top notch, but their reliability has been questioned in some publications. Want even more sport? Go for the GTI model.
3. Honda Fit - Smaller and cheaper than the Civic, but still has a lot of room inside and all of Honda's quality.
4. Ford Fusion - Ford's come a long way on quality. The Fusion is getting great reviews and there should be some deals. I haven't driven one though, so can't fully recommend it.
If these aren't interesting, give me some more specifics about what you're looking for and I'll give you some more options. Good luck.
Oh, and do NOT be tempted by the Chevrolet Aveo. It's cheap, but is routinely called one of the worst new cars available today.
