Well, from the specs I looked up on the engine, I think cost is more important to them than performance or efficiency. I'm gonna have to go with Erich Sonntag (BMW Product Manager) on this one...

Earlier this year BMW has publicly complained about the performance of the Tritec engines and did not renew its supply contract after it expired in January. “It was a very old-fashioned engine, cast iron and only one camshaft but four valves per cylinder, so there is no flexibility on valve train. This engine was just a very cheap engine, but also not very effective on function, performance and fuel efficiency.” Sonntag told Ward’s.
