Most definitely. Especially if you're talking about the Model S. While the Volt looks like nothing more than a badly-copied Prius, the Model S looks like a well-copied Maserati.
Do I think GM's Volt will have better quality, reliability and technical support than Tesla's cars? No. While GM just filed for bankruptcy and struggles daily with huge amounts of debt and legacy costs, Tesla is backed by some well-known Silicon Valley millionaires. Plus, Tesla just got a nice little shot of capital from the government.
So, yeah, with Tesla, looks and performance easily win out over boring and unreliable.
Which one would you rather be seen in?

GM at least has a whole lot of infrastructure which could absorb the potential backlash of a recall and response more readily to widespread consumer complaints with some aspect of their vehicle.
I don't think Tesla is strong enough yet, both in terms of the polish of their design and their corporate power, in case disaster strikes and for example some serious real-world flaw is discovered which could torpedo the company's revenue stream.

• Tesla will need clout to survive. However, I think they have a solid technology.

No. I read an article about the Tesla in a recent issue of Car and Driver, it seems to be on relatively shaky ground. GM at least has a whole lot of infrastructure which could absorb the potential backlash of a recall and response more readily to widespread consumer complaints with some aspect of their vehicle.
