The best way to make sure you don't get scammed is to do your research. Learning about transmission fluid levels and spark plugs and that kind of thing can really help--you should go in knowing what kinds of fluids your car needs. If you have a relatively new car and you change the oil every 3-5,000 miles and make sure you buy new tires as needed, then there isn't that much you'll need to have done, except maybe topping up the wiper fluid. Mahalo's How to Do Basic Car Maintenance guide gives a great overview of the basic parts of a car that require maintenance that you can read before you go to your next oil change.

Another way to safeguard against getting scammed and to make sure that you don't miss something that really could be wrong is to take your car to the dealer for the oil change instead of a quick lube type place. It might be a few dollars more, but if something is really wrong with your car, they will usually spot it, and they won't be as likely to offer you services you don't need. If they do, you can always say you'll think about it and take it somewhere else for a second opinion.

Good luck!
