What function does the gasoline engine provide?

The gasoline motor provides a boost of power when the electric engine needs help, such as when climbing a hill or passing.

Does the combustion engine turn a drive shaft or does it power a generator that produces current for the electric motor or is there both an electric motor and drive shaft?
