NO.
The technology may exist to do that but the government is not capable of managing a project like that. It would be a bloody disaster.
And I would not be OK with having to spend my money ( or forcing you to spend yours ) for a new or retrofitted car.

On nice straight turn pike stretches I would feel pretty comfortable with using the technology. Small twisty roads with a drop off on one side, no thanks.

An upgrade to the highway system would allow your car to drive itself but you HAD to buy a new car would you?
So... my full question really is: If the entire country's road system was upgraded to allow cars to pilot themselves, but you either had to buy a new car, or have an expensive retrofit done to your car, would you be okay with that? Thoughts?
Side Question: If the technology exists today for vehicles to drive themselves from point to point (and it does) what will it take before it's commonplace?

You have any links for these "power buss bars", maybe you're joking, but I have no clue what that is.

they exist in subways. "Avoid the third rail!"

It could also be done inductively, where the car gets power electromagnetically transfered to a coil at the bottom of the car from coils embedded in the road. Not sure if I like that idea.

It depends on how much it costs and I have to be convinced that it's safe. On nice straight turn pike stretches I would feel pretty comfortable with using the technology. Small twisty roads with a drop off on one side, no thanks.

If you never force people to upgrade, aren't you at some point going to be holding everybody else back for just a few who don't want change?
I just don't like it and would not do unless I was forced. AND I don't want anyone to force you do do it either.
As to your second quesion, look back to the transition from horses to automobiles. Nobody was foced to buy an automobile, but it happened, and roads were built. and it happened very quickly. The roads were built because the people forced the government to do it. That is the way government is supposed to work. It is supposed to serve and protect the people.
I would be much more agreeable to something like this if it could be handled outside the government and without coercion.
