Well there are two parts to that aren't there...

a) "If I could do anything..."

There are things many that I would love to do that I'm not likely to ever get a shot at doing, paid or unpaid.

They include some of the things other people have mentioned like being a tennis pro or an astronaut. I'd happily be either of those things, and you wouldn't have to pay me a heck of a lot either.

In fact, if I had enough money, I'd pay you to let me do it. Why do you think I claimed the pages for Space Shuttle, Virgin Galactic and Space Tourism? :)

If you look through the list of pages I claimed and the questions I answer, you'll probably we able to make a good guess at any number of things I'd love to do.

b) ".... and get paid for it...."

And this part is about things that people love to do, which maybe there are plenty of opportunities to do, but which are pretty hard to get paid for doing.

In that category, for me writing would be near the top of any list.

For example I'd love to be a columnist for the New York Times.

All things considered, I'd go for being a certain kind of thinker and writer. Someone like Dan Ariely, one of the most well known people in the field of Behavioral Economics. He gets to work at MIT, but he also writes columns and appears on TV, and gives talks at events like TED.

That's a pretty cool life in my view.
Asker's rating:
It was really hard to pick a best answer for this cos its so personal, and everyone's response was amazing! This was voted most helpful, and I really liked the way you made the point that most things worth doing don't require you to be paid :). But I really appreciate everyone's answer!!! Thanks :)

They're facinating and beautiful creatures and I've always wanted to be a part of learning more about them. And, if I could get PAID to do something I'd love, then all the better!!

There's no question you can get paid to do that. But if your background is not biology then you'd have a lot of retraining to do before you could get there.

But... have you heard of Earthwatch?

http://www.earthwatch.org/

Seriously people have gone on their projects, then gone on to do some further study, and ended working in their dream job doing exactly things like that.

I would work with seniors in retirement homes, assisted living and homes or apartments..
Playing cards, writing letters, BINGO, assist with meals anything that they may need an extra hand for. And in general just to listen! They need to be heard! Elders are a part of our community and seldom heard.
Just yesterday I met a woman who is 80 and still a rereceptionistI asked about her retiring and she said she could not afford too.... money gone.
So I would help the elderly. I do now on a volunteer basis but if it could be my full time job!

I am a Pop Culture Junkie, with a specific interest (and an unused degree) in Gender and Sexuality. I'd get paid to collect random, useless trivia by reading, watching tv and movies, surfing the net and blogging. Perhaps my second job would be Scrap Crafting (making folk art from found/gifted material... like sewing drawstring hand-bags, making sock monkeys, decoupaging, etc.)

Hmmm, looking at what I just wrote, I wonder why I haven't found a way to get paid doing any of those things.

What's with all the unhelpful votes? This is an personal opinion question. If someone answers with what they would like to do, it is not unhelpful. It didn't ask "What would you do to make the world a better place?". It just asked if you could do anything and get paid, what would it be.

I don't know about the "unhelpful votes" comment. I'm semi-new to this place. Forgive me. However, do I detect a sense of guilt? Don't come down on her for wanting to make the world a better place. It's what we ALL should be doing anyway in our spare time off from work and with no pay! (i.e. volunteering)
dannyjohns...
dannyjohnson  |  July 02, 2009 07:09 PM
@samid: No these replies have nothing to do with 'guilt'. Sure, we all should be doing something great for the world, but this is an opinion question.

Voting Unhelpul Answer on an opinion question isn't the proper way to do things here.
bunnyphuph...
bunnyphuphu  |  July 02, 2009 07:09 PM
@samid. I don't understand your comment. I don't think there is any 'guilt' from any of the other comments, I just find that when people place a personal negative opinion on what others do, then list what they consider to be appropriate... awfully irritating.
Me personally? I think that the word 'charity' in charity work should be just that. Work that is done out of kindness and not with money attached.
I would never want to be paid for my charity work (yes, I do charity work) but at the same time, I didn't mark her answer as unhelpful.

Anything in the world? I would be that person that comes up with the ideas for new inventions. I'd occasionally draw out the plans for it, but mostly just tell someone my idea and have them perfect it and come up with the prototypes. I'm not the inventor type, but I have an imagination and I love problem solving. This is something I'd really enjoy doing, which is why I'm going to school for Marketing as well as Accounting.

andreaxxjean  |  July 02, 2009 05:50 PM
Marketing - an integrated communications-based process through which individuals and communities discover that existing and newly-identified needs and wants may be satisfied by the products and services of others.

Marketing is defined by the American Marketing Association as the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. (wiki definition)

Those products could be the products I think up.

Yes, I would like to be a comedy writer.

I've thought about doing this for many years, but was turned off by the 'cut throat' attitude and competition in this type of business.

If I could just write hilarious stories and scripts without worrying about the competition and deadlines... I'd be doing it right now.

Anything I darn well want! Because, let's face it, no matter how much you enjoy a particular activity, if you find a way to make it a job, it will eventually get old, boring, and you'll wish you did something else. Work is work, no matter how fun it is just because you are being made to do it at a time when you don't necessarily want to and probably more often than you want to. It's a psychological thing. It's the problem of being forced to do it when it needs to be done, rather than it being a leisurely, anytime thing.

So, since we are dreaming here, the ultimate job would be getting paid to do whatever I darn well please at any given time.

This is probably the easiest question that I have ever answered on Mahalo. I would read books.
As I entered seventh grade, I was filling out my schedule. One of the electives was reading. I was very suspicious of this. What do you mean reading? Are you trying to tell me that you get credits for sitting down and reading. Go on! What's the catch?
There was no catch. You did have to write a couple of paragraphs explaining the book. What a wonderful class. Back in fifth grade, my teacher had criticized me for reading too much.
So when I found this class I was;

I'd rewrite the Bible. Simple as. I'd write it how it was supposed to be written - truthfully. That may seem harsh and perhaps a little unprovoked, but that's what I would honestly do.

I'm not going to go into all my reasoning - it would take me forever, and I'm not preaching to those who do believe in the Bible. I'm not asking for an argument, and I'm certainly not asking people to feel the same way as me, I'm just saying...that's what I would do. :)

I hope that answers your question.

I'd travel around the world, meet people everywhere, and write a memoir on my experiences. So, even when I leave this world, someone out there could learn and be changed by my life. It would be great to know that it meant something.

Interesting Question.

I'm sure if you had caught me back in my High School/College days, the answer would have been "Supermodel wardrobe change technician".

Though I'm sure the job would have gotten old pretty quick (Oh man, someone get these supermodels away from me and find me someone nice!)

But now that I've grown up and have a wife and family, the whole supermodel thing just doesn't fit very well anymore. So doing something that I enjoy while getting paid for it is best. And luckily for me, that's the job I have!

I am working on a university research project that:
A) Allows me to work from home and spend more time with the kids.
B) Meet some of the brightest and most interesting people in the world.
C) Get paid to do something I really enjoy

So the only real change I could as for is to maybe add a digit or two to that monthly deposit : )

Being a songwriter. I want to touch the world with my music. There is so much that you can make people feel. With all the bad songs right now that talk about sex or drugs or women, I want my music to uplift people and show them that there is something some much better and more beautiful in this world. Life is like holding pages of a story. You know it's important but don't always know what to do with it. You don't know where the rest of the book it. You can't know everything that lies ahead, but I hope my music will give them that stronger grasp on those pages and a better understand of what is already written on their hearts.

I would be a paint splatter artist. I would sell my work online and have a modest studio in a quiet rural area.

I like the visual style of the medium, and the fact that no two images would ever be the same.

In addition to the sold paintings I would often put on shows and finish and frame a piece as performance art. People would get to eat, mingle, and meet the artist (me) The sold paintings would be my bread and butter, but show proceeds can be donated to various charities.

I would also like to get paid to take care of my kid. I like hanging out with him. He could be a really cute baby model for environmental causes. 'Keep this World Safe for Me too!' could be his caption.

And I would be paid enough to not worry about mortgage, utilities, and food. I could just revel in my job. Oh I would love to feel good doing a job!!!

I guess I would begin my answer by saying this in honor of my father who was a Civil Rights reporter who got hit with a brick covering a march in Illinois. ``No one got hit upside the head for nothing.'' The statement ``no one got hit upside the head for nothing'' means that I am interested in social-media content that goes to truth. So, having said ``no one got hit upside the head for nothing'' then I would say that if I could do whatever I wanted and get paid for it, it would be two things:

1. I would like to do ``The I Is'' show that is coming together in some of the notes located on http://www.Facebook.com/JohnEvanFrook, and play it at the same exact theater that Chazz Palminteri made the West Coast debut of ``Bronx Tale,'' then redistribute it on the Internet as a kind of ``Last Waltz'' thing.

2. Mahalo.com pages. That is a totally genuine part of the answer. The reason Mahalo.com is important is because it creates structure and brevity, It'd be cool to work onsite too, doing just about anything. It would be cool to help book Kevin Pollak's show but that'd be onsite, and is real different, and is already handled. Last week's show with Kevin Smith was one of the gutsiest things by both people I have ever seen. Tom Snyder used to say my dad was the best booker The Tomorrow Show ever had. I would also like to get some of these YouTube editors who are amazing to show me how they do it. And it'd be cool to try to go 24/7 at least for one day with a Twitter news show on Mahalo. It sounds like I am lobbying but the truth is that this is logical and fun. This is where it goes. The model is right.

(I have proven to myself I could spend an entire season at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita and earn out. In the back of my mind, when my boys get through college, I plan to do that at least a year or two. )

Take pictures and make montages. All things that you look at in this life have a certain "story of interest" or "beauty" even if this is only in the eyes of the beholder.

A montage is somewhat of a slide show with life. You can bring more life to photos with a montage that has lots of effects and transitions to each photo. You can also put music in the background and try to fit this to your pictures. Each picture is edited prior to inclusion into the montage and placed, as in a movie, in the spot most meaniful to the story or idea your trying to display. You can use video too but I find still photos more interesting and easier to work with more versitality.

There is a challenge to photography and to the display of each picture and montages are an ideal way to realize this challenge. I think montages are a thing of the future.
