It has been stated that Niagara Falls froze over in the winter of 1911 but this is not entirely true as neither the river nor the falls freeze solid as water continues to flow beneath the ice at all times.
There have been six reported occasions (1883, 1896, 1904, 1909, 1936 and 1947) when the water flow over the American Falls has been blocked but only once (1848) when the much large Horseshoe Falls was blocked.

The water has never stopped flowing but ice formations are created in the winter time around the banks. It sometimes can form an ice bridge which can stretch across the river it can be several miles long. There was one in 1912 that broke and 3 people lost their lives.

It's said that in 1848 the water flow did stop because of an ice jam...At this time it actually allowed people to walk out and grab artifacts. It sometimes can form an ice bridge which can stretch across the river it can be several miles long. There was one in 1912 that broke and 3 people lost their lives.
