Yes you can mash the butternut after cooking. Here is a simple procedure which we do it at our home.
You can mash them with a standard potato masher.
Peel the butternut squash with a vegetable peeler.
Cut in half, and scoop out the seeds and stringy bits with a large spoon.
Cut into chunks and simmer in salted boiling water for 10-14 minutes until you can pierce the pieces easily with a fork.
Drain well, mash and add creme frâiche, butter or cream and beat with a wooden spoon until creamy. Add salt and pepper to taste.
