Can we find the research backing up Ann Coulter's assault on single mothers from today's The View?

Watching Ann Coulter's assault on single mothers today and she claims decades of social research that says single motherhood is destroying America.

Well, if the research is true, then it has jumped up considerably in the past 15 years. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics in 1989, "About 39 percent of all jail inmates had grown up in a single parent household and an additional 11 percent had lived in a household without either parent." (1)

In another survey from 1994, "Nearly 6 in 10 female inmates grew up in a household with at least one parent absent." (2)

This statistic had not changed much by 1998, "Almost half of all inmates grew up in single-family homes and about 12 percent had lived in childhood homes without either parent." (3)

(Note: 2 stated only women but 3 talks about all inmates)

So, while I can't find the supporting research, I have found significant research that disproves it.

One thing I don't understand, why is this viewed as an assault on single mothers? Shouldn't it be considered an attack on absentee fathers?? It still takes 2 people to get pregnant, right?

I think it would be even more illuminating to look at the illiteracy rate and how it connects with prison inmates. Something like 80% of inmates are illiterate, but if they learn to read, only 20% of them will end up back in prison. When the illiterate ones are released, about 80% of them will end up back in prison.

These figures can be found at www.childrenofthecode.org .

I think bugsy found the list, but to go through each article and determine whether the study was well done or flawed in each case would take quite some time. Surely someone has done a meta-analysis somewhere?

Is she just pulling a fast one with the statistics, though? If we take Darcy's facts, that roughly 50-60% of inmates came from single-parent (or no parent) homes, and couple it with census data that suggest only 1/10th of households are single-parent households, wouldn't that mean that if you had a more even distribution of single/two parent families, that the percentage of inmates coming from those single parent families would be much higher?

Did I explain that right? I don't have the math to actually sit and work that out, but I know what I'm trying to say.

Lies, damned lies, and statistics. :)

Here's a guy that compiled a list of studies and facts related to this subject.

That's an extensive list, and no doubt her source is buried in there somewhere.

I don't disagree that kids growing up in a single household have it more difficult than those growing up in a dual parent household. But I think she is a little loony by saying that "Destroying America" and then going as far to attacking those mothers, considering most of the time it's not their fault some could be widowed, others having to escape abusive situations etc, she's a lunatic and the real question should be is "Why do they still put her on TV? She says in this clip 80% of kids growing up in a single household go to jail. Yes, I would love to see where she gets those stats.

And what's up with Coulter not citing her "social research" - sitting in a coffee shop and watching how kids act isn't "research" - I am not sure what her research is, which doesn't answer your question, but I did find the latest census data on Single Parents, perhaps those numbers could be analyzed.

I'm trying to find the studies she is quoting, or things related to it.

I do agree she is a horrible person in terms of her approach and lack of empathy.

I can't believe I'm defending Coulter, but... what she said was "80% of the inmates in prison were raised by single mothers." This is far different than "80% of kids growing up in a single household go to jail" as you just said.

Interesting how no one is commenting that in order to be a single mother, the father has to be absent.. either by choice or other circumstances.

What if the statement was worded something like, "80% of the inmates inmates in prison had fathers who were absent or didn't participate in raising them as children."
A very different tone. Because you can have separated parents who actively raise children (together) --even if one does not live physically in the home w/ the child.

For whatever reasons (I care not to consider or ponder), Anthrax Coulter has purposely chosen to spotlight women as the crux of the problem. I think she's a self-hater w/ many issues, and it comes out in her flawed, lie-filled opinion books.

p.s. Jason C, sometimes when you refresh (after you hit SAVE comment), it's NOT saving your comments/text from a previous edit. hmmm.

Gotta figure the "shock factor" into why she is always on TV. The woman often, not coincidentally, times controversial remarks with the release of a new book. She boosts ratings and sells a lot of merchandise as a result. It's like Howard Stern, Rush Limbaugh, etc... Often the personalities that people hate the most get the most airtime!!

I take anything that Ann says with a grain of salt. I think she talks out of her a$$ alot, and finds irrelevant facts. She may have read a study, but has misconstrued it so badly to bend the way she wants it to.... I think shes a load.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I would gladly give my life to be able to spend a few hours beating Ann Coulter to death.
