Can vitamins go bad?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

All vitamins and supplements or related products have expiry dates. The expiry dates inform us that these products will no longer be effective after the printed dates. Expert advice is to buy these vitamins in smaller quantities to avoid wastage.

M$Thanks for the replies, but no one really addressed my question. I didn't ask about the expiration date. I asked about taking out the freshness packaging inside. I have vitamins (that were expensive), stopped taking them when I got pregnant and now want to resume taking them, but I noticed the freshness seal is gone and they are somewhat discolored. They don't "expire" until 2012, but they still look abnormal. I'm probably just going to toss them because I see no data that says discoloring is okay.
What do you mean by freshness packaging. If you mean the little plastic thing inside the bottle that is just for moisture absorbtion that ocurs after you open the bottle. But if the pills are becoming discolored I would not recomend taking them as the are probably absorbing moisture.
hmm, i wonder if they could just be wet then (or moist) and still okay to consume....?
I think buying a new jar would be cheaper than having them tested.

I'm selecting this as best answer due to your comment below that directed me to a site that said: if some medicines will keep in very cold or very hot condition then the breaking of there bonds will increase then the medicine will spoil before its expiry date, and led me to presume that my vitamins are spoiled.

Hi! There is another site which advice us to replace the vitamins after the expiry date because these vitamins may loose the efficiency to preserve health and prevent future illness.
Direct Quote from www.dunz.com:
"The effect of the vitamins after the expiry date will be different according to the ingredients and the basis of time. The big problem is that it will loose the efficiency to fight. Because the ingredients in this will splits and the effect to the body will reduce. Depending on the vitamin and the ingredients used in this there is a chance to change these vitamins in to a toxic substance."
