Can ultrasound be wrong?

We did ultrasound at 17 weeks and the doctor said it was a girl. I like baby girls very much and I want to have a girl, but I keep feeling that i'm carrying a boy. What do you think, can mother's feelings be right than the ultrasound? And what is the possibility to be wrong at 17 weeks?

Ultrasounds can most certainly be wrong. I've seen several times with friends of mine that even though they were told through ultrasound that they were having a little girl, they wound up having a healthy boy instead! This usually happens when the baby tucks his penis underneath him and the ultrasound technition didn't get an underneath view of the baby to determine the sex correctly. Hope this helps! My uncle is an ultrasound technition.

A friend of mine was told she was having a boy when she had the ultrasound at 20 weeks. She bought boy clothes, painted the room for a boy and both of us had our babies the same day and she ended up having a girl and I had the boy. She parted with some of the clothes, giving them to me! They aren't always right!!

Ultrasounds can certainly be misread! A friend of mine was told she was carrying a boy but she had a girl instead. Apparently the umbilical cord was positioned just so that the image indicated a boy. Surprise!

Hi,

I've never been in this position myself, but I did a bit of research and found that ultrasounds are not 100% accurate at determining the gender of a baby, and that the best time to determine the gender starts at 18 weeks.

I'm including my sources below, two of them are more on the medical side of things, while the third is a forum where people shared their own ultrasound experiences.

Best,
mcloudy

When I was pregnant with my second oldest child I was told I was having a girl. I was told this up until the day he was born. Yes, they can be wrong.
