There have been research studies about how the mind-body connection is very strong. I've seen a few studies of people who simply imagined exercising increasing muscle mass.

Guang Yue, an exercise psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio, carried out research with ordinary Americans, comparing people who went to the gym with people who carried out a virtual workout in their heads. Those who regularly visited the gym were able to increase their muscle strength by 30 percent. But those who remained in their armchairs and ran through a mental rehearsal of the weight training in their minds increased muscle power by almost half as much.

What the mind believes, the body will achieve.

You can certainly argue this, as some people get hypnotized to lose weight. So, it's not just the thinking about it, but the actual actions that your thoughts lead to by thinking about losing weight.

The reason hypnosis is such a powerful tool for weight loss is it's potential to help you build new healthy habits.

Only if thinking about it causes you to subconsciously do things that will help you lose weight, like moving more or eating healthier or less.

But the brain is a miraculous thing. If you're not up to trying any proven weight-loss actions, I say knock yourself out and think about it all you want. You may have some good consequences. And certainly spending mental energy thinking about losing weight will have much better consequences than thinking about hot fudge sundaes and deep-fried food.

Theoretically, the only way to lose weight is by eating wisely while at the same time getting enough physical exercise to burn off all the excess calories and fats consumed that your body does'nt need in order to operated effectively. While it sounds simple enough, one's body does'nt exactly have an image of it's self in terms of if one has extra fat or not (excluding the brain(obviously)) hence has reflexes to stop starvation (such as hunger). Because of these reasons it is Physically impossible to lose weight specifically by just thinking about it, although it may help in a mental way by providing more willpower and determination.

I am not a doctor or psychologist so this answer is only meant to be what I would logically conclude and hence should not be taken as fact.

What I find is that the more I concentrate on food, the more I gain. This may be a result of my metabolic disorder, though.

I loose best when I don't necessarily think about food, but when I plan my menus and shop accordingly. For me and many who have blood sugar/insulin/leptin problems, thinking about food is a sign that we're craving something that will raise our blood sugar. When this happens I know my metabolism is screwed up, and I have to take a little L-glutamine to help straighten my system out.

I think it may be true for people with normal metabolisms--but then, do people with normal metabolisms have struggles loosing weight?

I guess you might subconsciously avoid snacks or fast food by placing losing weight into your frontal lobe. It would be kind of like a subliminal reminder that could block food obsession.

Yes. I do believe so. Especially when your at a certain level of pride in your overall workout intensity and discipline. The effort and time one has invested in accomplishing a progressively healthy physique may inspire you to achieve this powerful state of mind that is capable of this affect. Combine a long-term sense of achievement and confidence with dopamine, and other neurotransmitters produced in abundance by the brain during, and after intense exercise, and you can achieve this exponentially. The mind influences the body.

If that actually worked, do you really think there'd be any overweight people in the world? That's almost as bad as when people buy gym memberships, but never actually go to the gym and workout.
