Can I Use MS Office on an iPad?

As a writer, my favorite word processing program is Microsoft Word, which is included in my Microsoft Office subscription that I bought last year. Will I be able to put this program on the iPad and use it whenever I want to? Or should I look into another type of word processing program?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

No, you cannot use Microsoft Office on an iPad. Stephen Elop, president of Microsoft’s business division, said in an interview with Bloomberg that the company will “wait and see” how iPad sales do before adapting Microsoft Office 2010 for the device. “We never say never, but we have no current plans to develop a version of Office for the iPad,” Elop claimed.

For the first time, Microsoft will also release web-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. For a monthly fee, users can access Microsoft’s software on the internet instead of storing the software on their own computers. Basic versions of Word and Excel will also be available free of charge as Microsoft tries to play catch-up with free web applications like Google Docs, which performs many of the same functions as Microsoft’s office suite.

Microsoft’s decision not to adapt their software for the iPad comes after Google’s announcement to support the device.

The short answer is no. Microsoft announced earlier this year that it has no immediate plans to make any apps for the iPad. They wanted to wait and see as to whether the iPad’s sales warranted the effort, and didn’t view Google as a threat on that front (office software) specifically. Recently (on July 31,) however, given the better than expected sales of the iPad and its Google apps, they announced their intention to enter the tablet computing market with their very own competing tablet computer running a version of MS Office and Windows 7.
