I have given you a page from wikipedia that explains this.
When I was big time into sketching I used a full range from 9H to 9B, the purpose for this is light and shade values to your art. An "H" value is harder and gives you strong deep lines, while the "B" value is softer and can be used for shading and a gradient appearance. What I would do was use a medium "H" value pencil with a soft touch and do the outline work and once I was satisfied with the outlines I would then begin using the different pencils to add dark and light values and eventually work to the real soft "B" grades to do the shading and shadow values. I would work from hard to soft because of the smear factor with a soft core, it will smear, so I would leave that work to the end to lessen the smear factor.

M$Graphite Pencils are made from a material called Graphite or Black Lead mixed with clay.Th more the Graphite, the softer it is. Clay is a compound that makes it harder.
Graphite drawing pencils are very popular media in creating art and drawing. Many artist is known to be using these pencils.
Mainly there are just two types of pencil rating systems created which to give the correct specifications for the harness and blackness of pencil shade. US based rating system and European which is used by artists. The US system gave a numerical value while the Europeans made lettering scheme. Based on their hardness it corresponds to (H) while (B) for blackness. For the fine point it is (F).
9B is the softest and the blackest while 9H is both hardest and lightest. There 20 ratings for Graphite Drawing Pencils but some manufacturers has 18. Over all these types of pencils is especially made for drawing and making sketches. 3B pencil is a Graphite pencil and it may just vary the hardness of the core and the blackness of its shade but still it is made for drawing.
