Can I install DD-WRT/Tomato/ another "better" firmware on my router? Can I lower the uplink buffer?

Hi, My router is a Belkin G+MIMO ((model # F5D9231-4 V1), and to be honest, it sucks, alot. It pretty much can't take it if I go onto xbox live for over half an hour, and just dies, and restarts. Apparently, or at least according to some network analysis tool that was shown on lifehacker yesterday, my high up/down link buffer is causing this problem, I have no idea how to change this. I heard about these custom firmwares for router that are pretty much all around better, I have been unable to find this info. If Please help. I would tip but as a new user I only have 21 cents, sorry!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

DD-WRT doesn't support your Belkin router. I did a hardware search on their website. DD-WRT will works only on some Belkin routers but yours is not included.

Tomato firmware will not work on your Belkin Router.

I hope you Belkin router isn't the crappy model involved in "Mechanical Turk Shilling incident." Belkin paid reviewers 65 cents to post good reviews in Amazon and NewEgg. You don't actually have to own or used the product to review just give it all 5 stars rating.

If your router keeps on failing. The best suggestion I could give is to simply buy a new Linksys WRT54G2 router. I own one myself and its pretty solid. Its also very affordable. A google shopping search yields $ 23 to 93. When I bought mine $65 a year ago. You could probably get a better deal even on retail today.

BTW I am still using the stock Firmware setting on my WRT54G2. If you like to mod your router to do more. You could use DD-WRT or Tomato. In fact all of those 3rd party firmware projects all started from the original Linksys WRT54G router.
