How is drinking mouthwash like Scope bad for me?

Tip for best answer: M$0.47
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The chemicals in a mouthwash are designed as disinfectants, and will not digest properly. The chemicals, if in the stomach, could cause a toxic reaction as the chemicals would not break down in digestion.

Many mouthwashes like Scope contain methyl alcohol and the alcohol you drink in a beer can, a bottle of rum, or a box of Franzia is ethyl alcohol so there is a basic difference in what you are drinking.

Scope specifically contains Denatured Alcohol which they will say is added for its "anti microbial properties" but in reality it is added to get around having to pay the additional taxes on the sale of alcoholic beverages. Scope contains this type of alcohol so by law it is not considered an "alcoholic beverage". (Scope-Mouthwash.com | FAQs)

Read this The Straight Dope | Can you get drunk on Listerine?

"Denatured alcohol is ethanol to which poisonous and foul-tasting chamicals
have been added to make it unfit for drinking. There is more than one
recipe for denaturing alcohol; some add methanol or isopropanol, some
gasoline, and so on." http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/chem00/chem00102.htm

Blindness and organ failure are the "in the long run" problems with drinking this type of alcohol and if one is at the point in their alcoholism that they are drinking Scope or other NBEs (non beverage ethanols) the problems in the short, mid, and long term are multiplied due to the extended progression of the disease of alcoholism and its effect on their whole life. Most likely there are at the very least moderate troubles at home, at work, with the law, and any other area of that alcoholic's life and all of them will be leading to long terms problems if they are not already.

I have never met a person who drinks Scope or another NBE who was not an alcoholic. I have been in recovery myself for over 4 years and I have seen, talked to, heard the story of, and specifically been told of the troubles of Scope consumption from 1000s of alcoholics over this time.

"Blindness and Organ Failure" are always the very least of their problems.
