Can Canadians buy and register cars in the united states?

I'm Canadian and want to do a road trip from SF -> NYC. Is it possible for me to fly to SF and buy a car, register/insure it?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I think you might be able to do so but it is not a common enough thing to show up on the DMV site.

In the USA all registration and insurance is done at the state level or equivalent and they all have different rules. The California website is here:
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/formsreg_alpha.htm

They do have a particular form for exporting cars; but, it is not clear how you would register and insure one as a visitor. You should call or email the California Dept of Motor Vehicles.
