Can anyone recommend alternatives to the likes of Media Temple, Slicehost, Linode etc?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Don't use GoDaddy unless you want to pay extra for buxom women to appear in ads on their behalf.
I've had good experiences with bluehost and dreamhost, which both offer shared hosting (not virtual private servers like the companies you mentioned); both are solid for basic hosting needs.
If you really do want virtual private servers, I've gotten great value from Linode.
If you're a power user, you can get a basic hosting plan (either shared or VPS) and then prepare for downtime or traffic spikes with Amazon Web Services. Specifically, you can make a image of your server and then boot instances of it on demand for ten cents an hour. They're beefy instances, too--1.7GB RAM, Pentium 4 dual-core or equivalent, and 160GB of disk.
Best of luck...
