When we eat food begins to be broken down immediately. Our teeth do the first and the big work (mechanical digestion) and the enzymes within the saliva in our mouth begin the breakdown of the food.

The food is further broken down within the stomach by the stomach acid and then the liver does its part by releasing bile as the food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine. (chemical digestion)
