Can anyone confirm the legal mirror requirements for a car in the UK?

I have recently had my passenger's side wing mirror knocked off of my car and I want confirmation that it is still legal to drive.

I believe that the requirements under UK law is that the vehicle must have 2 working mirrors and one of those must be the driver's side wing mirror (the other one being the rear-view mirror and/or the passenger's wing mirror).

Can anyone confirm or refute this fact? - need a source!

You must have a usable driver's side external rear view mirror. Penalities are expensive, if you do not have a functional mirror.

You can ask a legal question for free on this site

Suppose, you didn't have a rearview mirror and were backing up in a car parking lot. Your car collides with another car backing up. The officer notices that your missing a rearview mirror. Do you get the ticket for not have a rearview mirror even though both parties are to blame?

A rearview mirror is a safety device.

High tech camera are replacing rearview mirrors and collision detection system warn of objects that are in collision while backing up.

Computer eyes will start watching blind spots and warning of collision.

All these devices reduce the risk of collision by the driver. The driver safety becomes the responsiblity of the manufacturer to assist the driver with sensor feedback preventing damage. Regulation and legislation could require more complex driver assisted technology. Just as air bags have become a regulated required item in new cars, so could driver assisted computer eyes.

UK law since 1/8/78 it must have two mirrors, one of which being on the offside exterior of the car.

Before that date, it was one of a) offside exterior, b) nearside exterior, or c) Interior.

My source is a bud of mine from London, he had an incident where he lost the side mirror, went to police station and got the info straight from the horse' mouth.
