Can anesthesia cause hair to fall out?

I just had surgery on my back and I noticed my hair is falling out pretty bad. Could this be from the anesthesia? Is this hair loss temporary?

Is there anything I can do to stop my hair from falling out? Help!

Unfortunately Yes, the stress from anesthesia and surgery itself can cause hair loss, but it is temporary most of the time, particularly for women. In term of anesthesia, I am not certain if the anesthetic chemical itself causes direct hair loss or just the stress associated with the surgery, although I think that the stress may be a more significant factor in predisposed women. You may have female genetic hair loss and mapping out your scalp and hair for miniaturization might help establish or rule out this diagnosis with objective measurements. Repeating the analysis may have value after 6 months has passed if the first measurements are not definitively able to make the diagnosis. I'd consult your doctor to find any treatments to help the hair from falling out or grow it back. Hope this answers your question!

Hi there! I am so sorry to hear that your hair is falling out. The truth is that there is a possibility that your hair is falling out from the anesthesia. It can also be falling out simply from the surgery. Surgery is very shocking on the body. What you have gone through may have been very stressful. Severe stress can also be the cause of sudden hair loss.

If you were put on a new medication, this could also be the cause. It is hard to pinpoint the exact cause at times. If your hair continues to fall out, you may want to talk to your doctor to see if it could indeed be the medication. Perhaps he can switch meds.

If the hair loss is from the anesthesia or surgery, you should soon notice that the hair stops falling out. The best thing you can do is relax and rest. Allow your body to heal.
