Can a night without sleep really help with depression?

I read this article and thought it it was good. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this??

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

I have never heard of this but can relate first hand experience with depression. Depression is an illness and is not always easily treatable. Some cases are more severe than others. Post partum depression is probably one of the easiest to treat and usually goes away after treatment. A few cases of post partum depression have triggered long-term depression problems.

Although my case of depression has been under control for years, I find that I still occasionally have a bout of depression, usually lasting a day to a few days. Most times it causes me to not sleep well and being tired compounds the problem. I find that when I finally do get a good night sleep, that is when it starts to lift.

I can't imagine why lack of sleep would help depression. Depression is caused by a part of the brain not functioning properly. The article is interesting though and I am interested enough to look into it further.

I wonder if this works on all types of depression or just post partum?

I'm thinking that it's actually the deep sleep you get from *not* having slept well that's really the trigger. I know that after a few days of not sleeping well a deep sleep makes me feel more human, a little happier so to speak.

Like a reset button :D
Deprive yourself of sleep for a good day or so, then zonk out and hit the reset button...sounds plausible

Sleepless nights seem to only add to the stress. My experience with depression is that when I was in the throes of it, my perspective was skewed. I made poor decisions, and was not aware of my compromised decision making capacity until after I was a wee ways out of the depression. That said, going a sleepless night, may seem like a good idea at the time, but actually isn't. The body needs rest whether you are depressed or not, it needs more rest when you are depressed.

Eating well is also important yet difficult when depressed.

Be gentle with yourself when depressed. If you can avoid it, don't make decisions when you are depressed.

Yes, I have noticed that on myself
I know once in awhile lose one night's sleep and am not angry about it-I just let it go because it's good.
I would feel better because it's like breaking the norms, it adds novelty and creativity. Depression has its monotonous ritual and you can break it by not sleeping one night.
Perhaps the cool feeling is one of the reasons why there are parties all night in the weekend.

I am happier without sleep and a little more focused. The problems I run into with sleep deprivation are social situations are not fun because people can tell your tired, and my temper is lot shorter. I have read that this is how they discovered tri cycling anti-depressants, something to the effect of it affecting your brain in the same way as sleep deprivation.

Here is the way they explained it in one of the psychology classes I took:

Sunlight can help battle depression. Many times, depressed people have gone nocturnal because they stay up later and later, afraid to go to bed and have nightmares. They sleep late into the morning and don't get enough sunlight. The easiest way to get a nocturnal person back onto a normal sleeping schedule where they wake up at a decent hour and get enough sunlight is to have them stay up for 24 hours, and then go to bed at a decent hour like 10pm.

I tried this and I ended up staying awake even longer; I'm working on 48 hours right now. I recently moved to the mid-west from the south and am having a hard time adjusting to the longer winters
