What is the best digital camera under $300, that fits comfortably in my pocket?

The comfortably in my pocket part is more important than the $300 part.

I've been reading Digital Photography Review for over five years and, in my experience, they have the most thorough and unbiased reviews of any digital photography website.

They recently reviewed a "flight" of cameras in the premium compact camera category, which corresponds closely with your requirements:

Their highest recommendations go to the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS and the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd:

The SD880 was the best from a design, usability, and build quality standpoint while the F100fd had the best image quality in DPRs exhaustive tests. The SD800 has a street price of around $250 while the F100d is closer to $280.

Personally, I've had several Canon PowerShot cameras in the SD line, and would not hesitate to recommend them. However, if image quality alone is your highest priority it seems like the F100fd is the way to go.

The Samsung TL34HD seems like an excellent choice for you. It's ultracompact and measures only 3.7 inches wide. To quote from CNET's review, "at 2.3 inches high and 5.8 ounces, it's perfectly pocketable."

Plus, it has an excellent touchscreen interface, is 14.7 megapixels, and has an optical zoom.

The answer is the Canon PowerShot SD770. And this beauty has a viewfinder along with the LCD screen unlike most of the similar Canon cameras which now have LCD screens only.

I will give you two good options;

1. Canon PowerShot SD880 IS
2. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700

1. Canon PowerShot SD880 IS

This one retails for $240 on Amazon.
The bottom line:
Simply put, the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS is an excellent point-and-shoot camera.
This camera also fits nicely into your pocket.

2. Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700

This one retails for: $399 at Sony.
It is $50-100 over your price range but it is really good.
You could get it for $349 at JR with free shipping.
Or at B&H for $349 also with free shipping.

The bottom line:
Part smart-looking snapshot camera, part 4GB portable digital photo album, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 will satisfy those who like showing off their pictures as much as they like taking them.

So you can really decide yourself on which one you want. Both are extremely good camera and both fit well in your pocket. Both are 10MP also.

if you really want to save space in your pocket, hold out for the samsung pixon 8mp camera phone. Versions of it should be arriving stateside via att and t-mobile early 2009.

1) Wide angle (27mm)
2) Optical zoom (18x)
3) Image stabilization
4) HD video capture

For pocket-sized, I'd go the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S. It's a 9MP with 10x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom.

I just got this camera for Christmas and absolutely love it! It fits right in the palm of my hand and takes AMAZING photos.

Fujifilm FinePix Z20fd Blue ~ 10 MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom & Face Detection
There is also a video to watch, the stuff this camera does is just really cool!

I can certainly recommend the Canon Powershot SD range. I owned an SD400 for several years and it took really great pictures. If I were to get another one today I'd go for the wide angle version, the SD 880 IS. It's better for taking indoor shots. Currently I use the Powershot S5 IS, but that's kinda bulky for your needs.

Olympus 1050 SW shockproof water proof it is a beast. i had a lesser model survive the floor of a mosh pit and live through the wash. i bought my girlfriend one on newegg for 230 recently
