I believe webcams are good:
1. You can see someone you are not able to see from a distance.
2. You can look someone in the eye online and know they are real.
3. Your meeting really happens, it's not just an email.
I believe the challenge with webcams:
1. It distances humans so that they do not have to be together in real life.
2. It gives someone a false sense that everything is okay with that person, just because you see them on cam, when in reality there may be something they are hiding.
3. It seems like you've seen someone yesterday, when you may have not seen them in years!
Now you have it, both sides of the story! There is a lot of great software out there where you can use webcams!
Here's some cool webcam and streaming video sites. Movino is interesting, as are the others. I believe there is much improvement to be made in this space, yet see for yourself. Enjoy!

I have family in the midWest (I'm in southern California) and the UK. They both use the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. we use the free webcam service from Sightspeed.com. If you have a decent Internet connection, the service offers excellent picture and sound quality.

I have a webcam on my mac, yet it's not something I do a lot of, just for fun once and a while, yet not for person to person communication, though this may change as time goes on. I've tried streaming from my phone with Qik, and this is cool! I believe some people like it more than others, and some people find it to be a little odd to see someone on the other end of the computer. I have mixed feelings about webcams, as I've seen the good reasons for it, and then I also see the not so good reasons. I believe webcams are good:
1. You can see someone you are not able to see from a distance.
2. You can look someone in the eye online and know they are real.
3. Your meeting really happens, it's not just an email.

I use my webcam as a webcam maybe every month to chat with my sisters or parents. I also use it as a security camera that records whenever it detects motion. This was nice to have in a dorm room since unfortunately it is hard to be very trusting on a college campus.
