As stated in the previous answers the length of the video will vary most significantly by the resolution of the video, and less so by the content.

On cannon's website:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=16719#ModelTechSpecsAct

The list 14 seconds as the shortest video length you would get on a 32MB card and 3min 9 seconds as the longest at the poorest setting.

I would pick up a 2 or 4 GB card. You can get them locally, even at WalMart for less than $20 most times.

Even if you're under 18, you can get a card online for a lot less. Just go to a local mall that does gift cards that have visa symbols on them, which you can use to buy stuff online.

Online, you can get easily 3-4x as much memory for your money.

An .avi will be the same size no most camera's no matter the type. You should get about 5 to 10 minutes total.

Probably not a lot, it really depends on the resolution of the video, but either way, if you're going to be recording more than a few minutes of video, or if you want it to be a higher resolution, i'd go with a higher capacity memory card, a gigabyte at least.
