Can an Eye Fi card upload photos to my laptop in real time?
Does anyone have any experience with EyeFi SD cards?
It would be great if I could review a batch of photos on my laptop before moving to the next scene.
If I'm shooting on location, I always have my laptop with me. If I buy an EyeFi card, can I automatically configure it to upload the photos directly from my digital camera to my laptop?
Can I do this without the presence of an existing wireless network? Can I set it up in AdHoc (or similar) mode?

Yes - if they are both connected to the same wireless network and your laptop has the EyeFi software (or another server) installed to receive the pictures. It will also require that the network it is connected to is a known network. If all of these things are true the transfer should be almost instantaneous if you are not actively taking pictures.

I have achieved what you are looking to do. The eyefi cards do not work in an ad hoc network configuration but you can solve this problem simply. I bought this battery powered router (http://www.cradlepoint.com/products/phs300-personal-wifi-hotspot), it lasts for 3-4 hours and all you have to do is flip the on switch, connect your laptop to the signal and the eyefi will upload photos directly to your laptop. I am using this solution for my photo service www.eventpod.net.
I hope this helps. Goodluck.

Can the EyeFi card communicate directly to my laptop?
Have you used one of these cards Look?
Unfortunately, everything I have found on their forums indicates that you cannot easily do this. You may be able to configure this kind of network using a command line utility to configure the card but I can't find any reliable sources/instructions.
I agree that this /should/ be a supported scenario but it looks like it isn't.
Perhaps you could combine the Eye-Fi product with one of the 3G based portable internet wireless routers. Then you could drop one in where you did have power (and cell reception). It would be expensive and imperfect but it might get you closer to what you are looking for.
If not, I'm sorry. I hope someone else can help you out.
