There's a couple compact HD video cameras out there that have gotten a lot of hype lately, for their price, size and performance. Both of them are under $200. They fit in your pocket and are easy to use and take anywhere. Either will allow you to take widescreen video and upload it to YouTube. The results will look terrific.

And at under 200 bucks you can't go wrong.
NOTE: I'll try and shorten that link.
In the mean time read this...
""The compact DEMO SDR-S7 SD Camcorder from Panasonic is a lightweight, convenient camera for those who love to capture all of life's unexpected moments. Just slip the S7 in your bag and forget about it until you need it. When you're ready to upload all that unbelievable footage for emailing, printing or sharing on YouTube, SD memory cards (sold separately) make it quick and easy""
EDIT I:
You might also want to checkout the HDC-9 which is 3 times smaller than the SDR-S7 , it is about 100 bucks more but with better quality and far more portable.

The DC210 records true High Resolution Widescreen for picture perfect video. Canon's Widescreen HR Mode uses the entire width of the image sensor, capturing true 16:9 widescreen.
So why is the way you record widescreen images so important? Because you want an image made for widescreen, not adapted for widescreen. Widescreen is the future -- every HD television is widescreen.
The story of how we do it may be a bit technical, but the result is clear to see. Canon camcorders use the entire width of the image sensor to capture your precious video in true 16:9 format. What difference does this make? It's simple. With more pixels captured, you get better image quality. Other camcorders force the wider picture into a smaller space on the sensor -- giving you a less true image, with fewer pixels and lower quality. With High Resolution recording on a Canon camcorder, the canals of Venice will be as grand as you remembered seeing them.
The viewfinder of your DC210 displays the image in a "letterbox" view -- from side to side and top to bottom, what you see will be what you get. No need to guess what your final image will look like when you're shooting. Not only that, but the DC210's big, 2.7" LCD screen and .27" widescreen viewfinder let you see exactly what you're recording.
The DC210 also lets you show your great Widescreen HR video on a standard television in letterbox format.
To make it even easier, a Widescreen Button lets you switch from standard 4:3 to 16:9 Widescreen Mode at the touch of your finger. The widescreen feature can also be used in both Program Mode and Auto Mode, as well as with the camcorder's advanced image stabilization.
The DC210 gives you the opportunity to own a camcorder that shoots as wide as your widescreen TV. Why shouldn't your camcorder shoot as wide as your widescreen TV? It should -- and our competitors can't match the widescreen video you'll get from your Canon DC210.

Which webcam or videocamera can I use to record videos in widescreen format and upload them to YouTube?
I'm looking for an affordable camera which records videos in widescreen format. I'd like it to be able to record the video directly to the computer (firewire or USB) or a camera that stores the videos in a memory card.

I would recommend the Panasonic SDR-S7 SD Camcorder, it dubs as a webcam, will record in full 1080hd and stores everything on a SD card. SD is a backwards compatible format to boot. And at under 200 bucks you can't go wrong.
NOTE: I'll try and shorten that link.

Thank you for all the information you've supplied on this question. It was still a bit hard to decide in the end since this camera also looks like a good option. I think I'll buy a Kodak Zi6 though because it is cheaper and I am very satisfied with the colors shown in indoor videos from the Macworld review.
