Calling all aspiring exterminators: September is Mahalo's Official Bug Month - Post your favorite (aka most hated) Mahalo bug.
1. Direct Questions and Answers and making sure they work every time
2. Approving Tasks and making sure it goes through every time
3. The system thinks a user has claimed more tasks than he or she has, and they need to be manually "unstuck"
4. Redirects can't be removed...Once they are in place, they remain there forever until a developer manually removes them
5. Fixing the "pinning" system to on pages to make it more manageable (this may be related to how lower belt levels cannot adjust the placement of their ad sections)
6. Making stats work correctly on managed pages
7. Either make adding a news story or blog possible or remove the "Add a Link" button from these sections
8. Many issues with putting images on pages have been reported
9. Clicking on "Submit" buttons, and the site responds, but it doesn't LOOK like it responds. So you get a lot of duplicate posts on Answers, or duplicate comments, or templates that are built 10 times over
10. E-mail notifications aren't sending still
11. Log-in slowness or failure
12. Removed images in Image sections on Topic Pages don't disappear forever and sometimes come back
13. "Disappearing" comments on Answers or text boxes on topic pages
14. Bugs on profile pages (for example, when the "Recent Activity" tab gets stuck)
15. Making category selection smooth and operational on all pages
16. General slowness to load pages, and the fact that pages are not fully operational until they have loaded all the way
17. Giving people points when they view 20, 50, etc. pages in a day and keeping track of these stats
18. Related Questions come up on topic pages that are totally unrelated to the page
19. Users who want to change their username can't

Click this link, for a second it would show the actual time this question was posted and then change to minutes. When it shows the actual date, it is in future! September 26, 2009!
is this intentional or a bug, or an issue with @mike 's system?

M$The more you can tell us about exactly what caused your bug and what browser / OS you're on, the better. Once we can reproduce a bug on our end, it's easy for us to figure out the root issue and fix -- so your help in helping us understand exactly what you saw is ... well, very helpful. Help us help you :)
Thanks!

M$nice to formally meet you mark...
It really puzzles me why Mahalo is not compatible with the most used browser - IE. So many issues with using IE to access Mahalo. Not everyone will be able to use non-IE browser, at all the time. This really annoys me.
Is Mahalo trying to enforce the use of non-IE browser?
oo! don't hate me for this.
None of the above things really, really bother me. :)
but there is one porno-related spam from a cancelled user still stuck in my inbox. the tekkies at mahalo can't remove it.
now THAT does bother me.
if you can view it (management) please do. it's pretty bad! fortunately the account was cancelled, but the spam should have been removed first. :)
thanks!
Not sure where to add new thoughts, as I can't answer again.
Perhaps my #1 issue is I seem to spend a good part of my life waiting for ping.chartbeat.net. Often I have to cancel the page load and refresh, and then for some reason it goes a lot faster next time around.
Anything you can do about that?
In case it's relevant, I'm usually on XP, latest Firefox, and a 6Mbps connection. There's nothing my end that should be slowing things down like that.
stanar:
That graph is extremely inaccurate, every site on the internet has extremely different usage statistics and if the devs feel they don't have enough IE users to warrant support or can't support IE because it is an outdated browser (especially IE 6 which is 8 years old) then they should be encouraged to ... well encourage users to upgrade to modern browsers.
We do our best to support all browsers, but that being said we do have limited resources at our disposal. If you run across a specific IE bug, let us know.
Also, @darknessfalls is right that the usage number vary largely by site. Here's a graph from June from w3schools.com which shows Firefox clearly in the lead.
I realize that some people don't have a choice in browser (using work machine, etc.) but if you do, using a browser with faster JavaScript processing (Chrome or Firefox) will improve your Mahalo experience greatly.
Howdy!
Thanks for stopping by Mark, Bug month sounds like a great idea... let me get you started here...

M$A fix for this bug was pushed to production and answer counts should be reflected properly in all lists of questions. Due to caching, it can still take up to 60 seconds for the answer count to increase, but the answer count will no longer remain inaccurate for longer than that.
Yes, these are really annoying. For example, those questions regarding plumbers in various cities especially had this bug. Very annoying as I thought I would be the only to answer the question, but someone had already answered it. Hmph!
i see this all the time.. especially annoying if it is your question and you think no one answered it because you didn't check your email or profile.
To all Mahaloians:
Until this bug is fixed, when encountering such questions, either add your answer, or simply type "vote" in a comment. Either action will bump the question to voting when appropriate. It can take awhile to show in the "Undecided" list, but check back periodically.
This has been a public-service announcement by someone who cares.
Mahalom,
Shin
This is a caching issue .. we're aware of it, and yes, very annoying ... we're on it.
Yes. Had two recent scavenger hunts to address this issue:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-community/scavenger-hunt-ii-answered-s-showing-0-answers
and
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-community/scavenger-hunt-ii-answered-s-showing-0-answers
Thanks to all who participated, unofficially we sent about 340 questions to voting. It would be interesting to know how peoples' "Best Answer" scores were affected.
Mahalom,
Shin
This has been going on for MONTHS and I really hate this because I want to read questions with answers OR sometimes answer questions without ANSWERS. I can't do either!
Yes, that is very annoying. Also, delays in the answer appearing are irritating. When I answer a question, sometimes it takes several minutes for it to show up on the page. When people answer my questions, it takes that much time and then additional time for it to show up in my profile.
This isn't a bug per se-- but I'd really really like to be able to re-order fact facts that have been input with the fact template.

M$@ssmacd, thanks for that clarification. i appreciate it.
however, in this case that isn't what i'm referring to. the two i reported today are coupon pages that have been around since 6/2 and 6/3. for the right column one has an ad block and references, and the other has a link section that was manually created and references... all automatically generated content completely gone from the right side of the page. i suppose that could be from coming over from the old system, but i had only heard of it affecting the how-to pages.
and in the case of my own pages, guide note sections disappeared several days after creating... devs say it showed i deleted them when i did not.
then i have a page that had about 20 sections disappear out of the blue... history showed i had done things i hadn't. and they are not disappearing during an update either... this occurs in between updates and i don't notice it until days later sometimes when i update again.
really strange. i lost most of the content for that one page and i'm still waiting to see if devs can restore it or not.
I manage over 80 pages, and haven't come across any disappearing content - at least not permanently. The only thing I've noticed is when I'm editing/adding content to a text box, then click Save, and the content isn't there. But then I do a refresh, and it appears. Another one that disappears - temporarily - is the Fast Facts. Sometimes when I add a new fact, and hit Save, it's not there. Then to get it to appear, I have to add a "test" fact (I just type the word "test"), then hit Save and my previous fact appears. Then I just go back in and delete the test one.
i think this one is getting more widespread... i just reported two more pages to @lon this morning. i'm reporting every one i see now. these two pages had almost the entire right side of the page gone. @lon manages one of them and a black belt does the other one. i'm absolutely sure they did not remove all the content from their pages... and the history does not even show it being deleted. although there are strange entries on @lon's history.
for some of mine it shows that i deleted sections and i didn't even touch those pages when it says i did, much less delete sections i wanted in there.
i see this as a MAJOR bug, because it directly affects our google rankings. having less content rich pages will hurt us... and the more pages are affected, the more it snowballs.
not to mention how it will hurt earnings... =/
"Isn’t a bug per se..." @ssmacd... this is the bug of bugs! As a matter of fact it’s the bug I hate the most at Mahalo. The Berlin wall of this site. A real page killer.
I find that simply hitting the refresh button resolves this issue. Refreshing has saved me hours of frustrating revision. If I still don't see the section after I've refreshed, I use Ctrl F to see where it may have wandered off to.
Respectfully,
Shin
We did kill a couple of bugs with vanishing sections a couple of days ago, if you still have pages that are not displaying correctly then can we get a couple of examples? Thanks! :)
I just spent over 45 minutes QCing this page (How to Apply Smokey Eye Makeup) -- because every time I saved a section, it wouldn't take. ( I did both a refresh and a hard refresh, @shinju-- and the page kept reverting to it's original format.) As it was a QC I didn't have the luxury of leaving the page unti later on-- I had to get it in shape for the user. It looks ok now-- but it was quite a battle!
The page looks okay now, @rayslakinski but maybe you can look at the history and figure out why it was fighting back!
Thanks, I've bookmarked that one so I can dig deeper into it
We're working on this one today specifically
oh, yes... i am still waiting to hear if devs can restore more than half of one of my pages... disappears with no notice... don't ever notice till i'm updating - usually after i've already added something new.
@smartweb some of the pages you're noticed may be older How To pages-- code was corrupted on many of the How tos that were brought over from the old system, and page managers needed to manually restore them. What you're seeing COULD be just pages that managers haven't corrected-- rather than recently disappeared content.
I recently had a small problem. I answered a questioned and after I submitted, I got the points and everything. Except, I did not see my answer on the question. It was a one time thing. Not sure if it happened to others.

M$Today I only have one that I don't think has ever been reported but has irked me on multiple occasions.
Inlinking and code do not work in answer approval boxes.

M$Yes, I agree.
It would also be nice if there was a way to go back and edit the text on these as well (for an hour just like answers).
and since jeff has that nice little image for us... let me just say that if i am really irritated with one thing on Mahalo it is that i *have* to rate a direct answer to get it to go away. i had a very unhelpful answer given to me and i thought the person was rather arrogant so i didn't want to rate his answer... but i also did not want him upset about a low rating... i would have preferred the option to not rate the question. i eventually had to rate it because it was irritating me by telling me i had 1 direct answer constantly.
After the next deploy these sections will support linking using wiki markup
fast facts:
when adding fast facts if a field was already filled but is not needed, like "Maker" you can't type over it with the info you want... it will not change. it always says "Maker". you have to instead add a new fact and delete the "Maker" field then save and edit to add more.
and frequently when you save it shows no ff at all... you have to edit again, add a new fact (i just fill it with a "space") then save and edit again and remove the new fact you added to get it to show up correctly.
and very similar to that...
sections:
if you have a section that was put there by the template, like "uses" or "background" and it is not necessary for the page, you cannot just edit and change it to what you need, it will not show the change. instead you have to delete the section and add a new one for what you need.
added detail for mark:
i use firefox 3.0.13 on Windows XP with service pack 3
and it comes up daily, almost every time i do the ff the first time, not so much when going back and adding later, but sometimes still does it then.
i always have to delete the sections i won't be using. never found a workaround for that one.
having to work around these bugs on a regular basis...
but i'm patient =)

M$awesome!
mark...
a note about what you said on the tutorial about the email issue. mine was working very well but yesterday slowed down. now there is a big lag and i have often seen and answered something before it notifies me then i get a notice about it several minutes later.
We also just changed out our queuing system for something more robust a couple of days ago, some oddness may have occurred during that time. Things should be doubly better with it as well as the new mail server that Mark mentioned.
here's a new one for you...
i just refreshed my browser showing my profile page (Firefox 3.0.13 on Windows XP with service pack 3 )
and it suddenly shifted all of today's recent activity to yesterday's date and shows nothing for today. was fine before i refreshed. did nothing else different.
got another one for you...
today it is not giving me credit for voting on undecided questions. voted on four - no points given... on the first two it will not let me see who answered the question, even after voting. never saw that before.
i don't see where anyone has mentioned not being able to claim all the tasks we should be able to claim for our belt level... many times i can only claim 9 instead of 10. and suddenly after one of the tasks is approved, it will unstick... but it seems random. it's not always the next task approved. sometimes several will be approved before it hits the one that stuck it.
and believe it or not, there are a few times when i have been able to claim 2 or 3 more than my allotted #. seemed like it was when i had a task older than 3 days in my list. that one might be fixed now, though, because i grabbed some older tasks and still could only get 9 total yesterday... then suddenly it let me get 10 again.
really strange. and frustrating when you are in a barnrasing and it is the middle of the night and no one is checking tasks. you just have to wait till morning when they get to yours to free some up. =) not as bad now as it was at yellow and green levels, though. =)
New mail server going in today, going online tomorrow *should* fix this
Mahalo Answers - Voting - Counters - Votes register and confirm, points not delivered. This seems to happen when voting through a long list.
Mahalo Tasks - Search - Please have it search Mahalo Tasks, and not Mahalo Answers. Hard to find Rush Week and Barn Raising Tasks right now because they got buried in all the PreApproved and Team Tasks. Maybe create separate tabs for major groupings of tasks.
Mahalo Answers on Mahalo Pages - List newest first, so page managers can see new activity and respond to unanswered questions without having to navigate Mahalo Answers.
Mahalo - Home Page - Categories - Please embed a link in this section header to go to a list of top level Mahalo Categories pages or list top level categories on the home page and highlight the most active some how. Right now the home page does not reflect the full value of Mahalo to people taking a quick peak at the home page. Navigation doesn't allow them to easily dig deeper into the topic pages or even know that they exist.
I agree with many of the other observations above too.

M$oh, i definitely second the request: "Please allow me to next through the entire list of undecided, right now it goes to next question in category instead of next in the undecided list" this confused me at first then annoyed me.
and i did want the categories for Mahalo pages to be available in a list, but i think i understand now why it isn't... there are just not enough in enough categories to make it look great. some categories have almost none, while others have many... and many possible categories that actually have pages built that could go in them do not even exist!
this is one area of the site that could use some TLC, but i'm sure it will get it as we continue raising barns and filling out pages. =)
Next question should go to the next question not NEXT QUESTION in category.... this is maddening to me!! thanks for bringing it up!!!
The undecided next question bug has driven me crazy forever. The worst part is that if there isn't another question in the category the next question is the current question. i.e. http://www.mahalo.com/answers/ncis/do-you-think-the-new-ncis-los-angeles-has-a-chance-against-the-regular-ncis-show
+1 on the Mahalo tasks suggestion! Tasks is too crazy the way it is right now.
brianm... if that is implemented would those assigned tasks come out of our task limit? right now i can't take any of the how to tasks pre approved for me because i have my limit of barnraising tasks... and am waiting for some of those to be approved.
if it does come out of our limit, it would mean no one on the how to team could participate in barnraisings if they have a lot of how to tasks. i like to do both.
Tasks search will come. But for now we are working on being able to assign tasks to specific users, that way these preapproved tasks will no longer show up in the open tasks tab, should make it easier to find newer/available to all tasks. We also pushed some code today that is live that rearranged the sorting of the tasks in the open tab. Newest entered tasks should now be at the top.

M$i bet i have had about 1 in 20 tasks submit themselves because of a double keystroke or some odd undefinable thing...
i think staff is getting used to me asking them to kick them back to me. XD
Hi Matt1,
If you don't mind, I'll ping you once these fixes are live and we can verify everything. As a note, I did notice in IE 8, I had to clear my browser cache to see the fix that I did for the page management tab. Would be helpful to know if you have to do the same. Best.
Code was actually just submitted today to fix both the team tipping and pages managed issues in IE8 and should be working within the next day or two. Thanks for letting us know and please do let us know of any more of these IE bugs!!
Great news, Mahalo web developers have fixed the team tipping bug in IE8 and the Pages Managed Tab in IE8! (I even tipped this question using IE8 to make sure it works)
@brianm, that's great these issues are being taken care of so quickly. I'll keep an eye out for any more IE8 issues.
@sjackson, I just cleared my browser cache to check and I guess the fixes aren't live yet. Feel free to comment here again or just ask me a direct question when the fixes are up and I'll double check to make sure they are working properly.
I actually thought of another thing to fix, but it isn't exactly a bug. Once in a while when I'm doing a task and typing in one of the little fast fact boxes, I'll accidently type to fast and somehow submit the task. Then I have to wait for a Mahalo staff member to get them to reject it so I can add the rest of the information. It would be nice if a box popped up to ask "Are you sure you want to submit this task?" after you click submit.
A quick fix is to just type everything you want to say in a Word document and copy and paste everything back into the task so you won't accidently submit it.

M$This is correct, from what I have heard is the Twitter API has been down for what seems about a week now. TwitterSearch and the @answers account are both affected.
Okay, well thank you :)
http://mhlo.me/7e9bb2c9 is the link generated by Mahalo and worked a month ago but now you get "problem loading page" http://www.healthcare reform.com/.
So one must go back and put in the real URL http://www.mahalo.com/health-care-reform. Note: I originally put in URL but these were converted over to the double bracket format so perhaps I created the related pages in middle of a build cycle.
The error makes the page manager look incompetent.
Also pages that used to exist but no longer (e.g., healthcare costs) give you an error. It would be nice if the page manager were notified of such changes.
Update: I just noticed that Mahalo this morning now converts that URL back into an mhlo.me/xxxxxx designation so this suggests that the indexing has changed (yesterday the URL displayed).
Update2: http://www.mahalo.com/how-to-build-a-mahalo-page (related pages section on the right) uses URL so there is inconsistency.

M$Just clicked on the link ... yes this is clearly a problem. Wondering whether this is widespread in your experience or whether this just happened this one time?
ALL of my related page links were like these. I fixed them all manually except for the one in the "answer". Once the developers see it and troubleshoot - hopefully they'll leave me a note and I'll fix the remaining one.
#10: is that an issue for everyone, or just some users? I've been getting *all* of my Mahalo notification emails.
#15: having an auto-complete feature would be really, really awesome. But I suppose that's something that's pretty far out.
#16: Have you guys already started to address this? Mahalo Answers seems extremely speedy right now.
#19: Yes, please!
edit: Oh, I forgot to mention… there's another bug: Tip black hole on answered questions.

M$A couple more bugs:
1. I emailed contact@mahalo.com with a potentially harmful security-related bug a couple of days ago. @jeffhoard or @lon forwarded it on.
2. When searching for a page that doesn't exist, Mahalo asks "what is SEARCHTERM?" The possible answers include a few extra options: "Test", "test", and "Default_Right_Rail". Also, is "Video Game Walkthrough" really a good thing to include as an option? I thought only Mahalo staff members are supposed to deal with those?
I just found another bug. This one is strange. I just saw this on @wy's profile:
Yes, it's August 31, 2009, and it's showing activity that it claims was made on September 30, 2009. Clicking through to the actual content pages, it shows "20 minutes ago" as expected.
Edit: apparently this is occurring on everyone's profile, who has done anything on Mahalo in the last hour or so.
The team tipping bug should be fixed. Thanks for bringing it to our attention, and thanks to to @brianm for fixing it.
Awesome.
A few more things that are pretty annoying:
1. This question is showing up as being asked "less than a minute ago," when it was posted days ago.
2. On profiles, it'd be nice if there was a "Public Answers" option under the Answers tab. Sometimes I just want to read many answers from a user, and clicking on a question link only to discover that it's marked as a private question is annoying. Either remove the private questions from showing up in that list at all, or add an additional option only to view public answers.
3. Often I find myself adding a tip to a question, because I'm curious about the answer and want to encourage a better answer, but I'm not the right person to answer the question. It'd be nice if there was a checkbox on the team-tipping option that would allow me to receive emails of new answers to the question, just like the "email me answers to this question" link does. And that leads me to…
4. If a user answers a question and clicks "email me answers to this question" (directly below the question), and also agrees to receive email notifications when they submit their answer, all answers are emailed to the user, including his/her own.
One more: on "Answer" pages (the FULL form, like this one), it says "If your answer is selected as the best answer, you'll earn 0.10 Mahalo Dollars." That particular question has a $20.10 tip - $20 from the asker (@jasoncalacanis), and 0.10 from team tippers.
Couple more things:
1. URL generation seems a bit odd, in different places across the site. Some areas in Mahalo Answers are making in-links to URLs like: http://mahalo.com/Page_Name, instead of the URLs introduced in Mahalo 2.0: http://mahalo.com/page-name. Not a huge deal, since they redirect to the cleaner all-lowercase URLs, but still — it's there.
2. Often I see questions on Mahalo Answers that were asked on a Mahalo Topic Page, and answerers don't notice that below the question it says "About Page Name." Perhaps the page name should be more prominently displayed, maybe in brackets after the question, like so: "When is the launch? (Mac OS X Snow Leopard)"
3. This question, http://www.mahalo.com/answers/pets/when-will-groomer-has-it-be-coming-on-again (which has since been vanished) was showing up in the undecided questions area, with no answers. The only option was to select "no best answer." @jeffhoard said this was because an unconfirmed user answered the question.
One more:
When you've reached 8,000 points, the number of points until the next belt level (Brown) is a negative number, prior to the Brown Belt Test. I assume this also occurs with black belts as well.
Why is the minimum tip $1.00? I wanted to make a small tip to someone who did not get the best answer, but it was informative nonetheless.
Many people answer my questions and sometimes it's hard to select the best one. Sometimes there are two good ones. The best answer may get the $.25 cent tip. But I would like to give the second best one $.25 too. This, in my mind, is a major flaw in the system!
For example, I would like to give psionandy $.25 for also answering my question at:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-community/is-there-a-daily-limit-to-the-number-of-questions-i-can-ask-here
but it says the minimum tip is $1.00 See the image below
I asked a related question on tipping recently here:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-suggestions/can-mahalos-tipping-policy-be-improved-upon
To ask the original question, I had to fund the question with a $1.00 tip because I was over my quota for the day. In the past, I have tried to increase the tip to $1 on an earlier Mahalo question, but it would not increase the number of questions I could ask by one. I would have preferred to increase the tip on a more difficult question, and leave this one at $.25
jeffhoard suggested I post the bug here.
And here is another bug I found earlier today and I posted http://www.mahalo.com/answers/mahalo-answers-technical-issues/what-does-api-keys-are-invalid-mean-i-cannot-edit-my-response
What does API keys are invalid mean. I cannot edit my response!
Help! this is a bug, and I cannot add to my comment. Need to go now, but just reporting. Since I am over my limit for questions today, I'd appreciate a tip back for reporting this bug. Thanks! See second image below:

M$Did the Next button disappear on the Recent Activity page? It didn't seem to work anyway, but I would like to see the history of my activity, at least for a few days.
I notice it is nice having the "long bug" for me, because I can scroll down a lot faster to find my post.
The bug about the Next button not working in Safari on my Mac Mini, but I have achieved a workaround. I'm now using the FireFox browser. It works there. Hope this helps someone.
Not being able to see my recent activity and having the Next button work must be a major bug. I'm using Safari on a Mac Mini. There are a lot of things I cannot do because I don't have the ability to search for my answers on other postings. I only know what questions I've asked. Check this link for more info:

My.....favorite.........bug......I.........shall............reproduce...........here...............is..........a.............rather.............loooooooooong..........bug............kind...........of.........like..........a.............stick.......bug
I am using the Safari browser on a Mac Mini and I could even make him a recursive bug if I took another snapshot! He is not my "most hated bug." I kind of rather like him as I said he was my favorite when I introduced him. Do favorite bugs count, or only most hated ones? I also just reproduced him on the Firefox browser running on my Mac.
I would be rather sad to lose him. But, at least I have a picture of him to keep as a memory.
I see many of my 'perks' listed, thanks for that. But here is another one:
How about using the same wikitext codes all over mahalo? I keep mixing up one or two brackets around inlinks, trying to incorporate pictures where this appears to not be possible, etc. It would be nice if answers tasks and pages all used the same format...
Thanks in advance...

M$Ahh ok I see the possible confusion. The double brackets are to inlink Mahalo's topic pages, that example shows links to mahalo answers which is best to use an outline which uses a single bracket and a full url.
In short, the double brackets are shortcut to topic pages, otherwise use a single bracket to make a link to a url.
Nice pic :)
They should all be going through the same renderer (the function that turns the wikitext into html) can we get some examples of where this is not the case? it would be very helpful for us. Thanks
You can always link using the single brackets if you want, you just need to put in a full url. Again sorry for the confusion! We used standard mediawiki (Wikipedia) markup for linking because its what Mahalo was originally all coded in, plus its easier than most markup languages like Markdown and even BBCode.
I understand, but I still think it is confusing.
It appears like the wiki syntax doesn't work on bio sections of profiles. In order to create a link in that section it requires the user to write plain-ol' HTML.
Well, for starters, check the AotD contest where the example picture shows we have to use ONE bracket to link. On tasks and mahalo pages, this is TWO brackets.
Also on mahalo pages, a text-block will not allow including a picture, nor use proper formatting (bold italics...)
Check my avatar page I've used a 'featured' block to write an impression, but I there have to use HTML codes to embolden instead of using the wikitext quotes. Same for italics..
I am sure I can come up with more, I'll report them as I find them.

That's because @mike set a future date for this post to expire, it's only so that we could have it pin to the Front Page of answers.
Oh, thanks for that.

First, regarding your bug list above:
Bug #5 - "Fixing the 'pinning' system to on pages to make it more manageable (this may be related to how lower belt levels cannot adjust the placement of their ad sections)"
I beg to differ with your Bug List theory about why this is happening. Granted, I may not be able to manipulate the ad placements very well, but I KNOW that my pinning issues do not in anyway *appear* to be related to the ads.
BUG #5 EXAMPLE A:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(sorry, no screencap available)
I reorganize a Mahalo Page, completely shuffling all of my sections. I pin a few of the top priority boxes in place. But the ones that haven't been pinned down sometimes will shuffle themselves upon refreshing the page. And some days, there's no unshuffling them. They get stuck in the wrong order.
Bug #5 EXAMPLE B:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pictures! Garrrrrrr, the pictures! I try to reorganize the photos section to move only relevant pics in view. (This can take 15-20 minutes in some cases). Then....I refresh, and it's all gone. Even if I pinned every frackin' photo before the refresh.
Photos also tend to get "stuck" and won't move (again especially after they've shuffled themselves once against my will). I usually have to wait a day or two, come back, and take my chances that the changes will stick.
Thanks for doing whatever you can!

M$Oh, I got ya. Thanks for sharing more bugs like this. They're Public Enemy #1 on my crud list.
I also experience the pinned issue. Even if I pin every single section on the page - when I hit refresh or user view, the sections will move around. Even the sections that are down near the bottom where there aren't any ads. Very annoying.
We're working on pinning today.
Just to be 100% clear, @smartweb, in my case the ads are not an issue. Not at all. I don't have a problem manipulating those, or understanding how things might "jump" when I hit double arrows.
My problem is random scrambling that has nothing to do with ads. Scrambling that happens only because the page was refreshed. ;)
@gno...
i can explain the ads part...
there are two pinning issues actually. the one you have above and the one i previously posted about in the last thread, which is directly related to not being able to control ad placement by pinning the ad blocks where you want them. if you pin everything else, then move something up with the double up icon, it will jump above the highest ad in that column, regardless of you having everything else pinned. you then have to unpin and manipulate everything again to get that one section to where you want it.
i have the issue you mentioned, too. they are both annoying bugs. o.O
i understood, @gno, but thank you for clarifying anyway. i was just explaining to you what the other issue is with the sections not going where you want them to be since you seemed to think there was just one problem. that one IS ad related, but only because we don't have the ability to move them or pin them.
i get both problems =)

That being said I would like to re-iterate yet again my nomination to fix ALL the statistics bugs.
Allot of the pages I manage STILL are not displaying their stats correctly.
I don't know what the issue is. But I would gladly donate part of my balance to see this was killed once and for all. And further RealTime adaptation on any scale for stats was adopted.
Kind Regards,

M$I think what you're really asking for is greater visibility into the status of bugs -- correct? I'm hesitant to set up a public-facing Mantis because a) it's kind of developer-y, most users won't find it easy and b) I think Answers works better because it's easier AND we, the devs, spend more time using the thing we're fixing -- which is also good.
As for stats: hear you. On it.
Ty for the comment.
I can see your hesitation , but even some of the greatest and biggest sites in the world have a Bug trap setup. Hell even apple has one setup.
Some use their own system mind you, but its their and all in one place so people can just go in and see all the current active, acknowledged, and resolved bugs right in front of them.
This would also be great for people who use mahalo on a day to day bases.
Which I would hope all the staff would eventually like to see.

M$You are correct. It would be helpful to see the total by date, and not by what is visible by the viewer.
that one might be that some have scrolled to the next page. i noticed it only shows the total for the ones you can see on the page instead of the daily total. click next then add up how many points you see for all pages for that date and see if it is right.
The friends section in the profile does does not work correctly. The numbers on the left do not match up with the avatars on the right. Somehow it keeps adding me as my own friend. Clicking add for someone who has added me as a friend does not do anything. The avatar stays in the fans section.

M$#2 The number of page views is not correct. I shared my page links through bit.ly and Posterous, and the number of hits on those pages, do not come close to the total. One page was viewed 67 times, but the total on my page said it was viewed 8 times. Another page was viewed 37 times and zero views show on my page as of August 31, 2009. Is there a delay?

M$This is one of the most reported bugs I get emails about, and we'll be looking into it today. Getting rid of mal-reporting notices is key, but being able to have an 'unread' status would really ease down the confusion.
-Jacob, Mahalo Dev
That's a known bug. Sometimes you have to reply twice in order to get rid of it. I just do a reply and put "test" in the box, and the question goes away.
Many are not actually bugs but my ideas of "desired features".
1. At my profile page, I cannot put more than one website.
I hope I can put more than one websites.
2. Ways for users to put "questions", "task" etc.. that he/she wishes to write on into a "KIV" list.
Sometimes users saw questions, tasks that he/she is interested to write in but need to find some time to search or write later.
3. Multiple replies to the same questions seem to be not allowed.
Though editing is still allowed but there is a time limit.
After the time limit, even if the person has new ideas to add on, he cannot answer.

M$I would like to add another point:
4. I just try Mahalo Search.
I think the feature of "disambiguation" like in wikipedia will be useful.
I just search "Wildfire" using Mahalo but it only shows the TV series.
5. A way for participants to message/chat with each other or small group will be useful..
It makes the community more closely "knitted"..
If there is no such way, peoples can only "chat" through Answer. This in a way lower the quality of the Answer.
This is more of a desired feature, rather than a bug:
6. Current widget cannot be customized.
It will be good if user can customise the widget to different size, colour etc.. or at least can have more choices.
For e.g one of my blogs has a blue background but the widget is of white background; the widget is too long too.

M$Thanks for the report. As mentioned above, team-tipping was fixed for IE 8, but this fix should also apply to IE 6. It will be deployed in the next day or two, so give it another try and let us know if you still have issues. Best.
New Find: I am using Firefox.
I had initially asked this question
How does HootSuite rate among Twitter clients?
I asked it and it was funded by Mahalo at 50 cents. A couple of minutes later an interesting vote added another 5 cents. Everything seemed fine but I thought I might add a 1.00 tip so I did and when the question reappeared with its new tip 1.00 was the total value. A dollar was subtracted from my account.
I figured one of two things would happen
1. The question would be valued now at 1.05 disregarding the default Mahalo funding.
2. the question would be valued at 1.55, adding the default Mahalo tip with the interesting vote +.05 cents
However the question remained at 1.00 and I was wondering what happened to the .05 cents that was added by @tchachra?
If I sort by unanswered questions, I get 10 answered questions offering tips before the unanswered questions offering more than the default tips. Then after the tipped questions I get unanswered questions from May. If nobody has answered them since May they probably aren't going to get answered today.
This behavior is not particularly usefull, I really want to see the most recent unanswered questions.

M$I would like to see more questions per page. Instead of having to page through questions, it would be awesome to get a real good glance at all the recent questions. They seem to flow off to subsequent pages too quickly.
If all goes well with the white label questions, there should be a big flood of questions coming in. Keeping tabs on them will become a challenge at that point.
I would say 50 questions per page would be good. Perhaps adding a featured questions tab would be appropriate for all questions that have a $1.00 bounty or more.

M$@markjeffrey: I'd suggest having Sean work with this user as Opera is 1-3% of our user base. It's not enough to follow standards.... we need to test the top 5-10 browsers because if something breaks in Opera or Chrome it is a sign that something bigger might be at work in our code, etc.
I have this issue alot with different buttons and its sort of a hit and miss situation. Sometimes it works, sometimes I have to refresh the page and try again.
We have not really done a lot of testing on Opera (IE and Firefox are our primary use cases) -- however, we do adhere to W3C standards, so this ought to work ... was this a one-time thing you experienced? Or does it happen every time you try submitting a report?
I occasionally get this problem in Safari too.
Okay @jasoncalacanis we'll have a deeper look at this one. Sean is dealing with a deeper issue at present (will take a few days) but once he frees up I'll put him here next.

"old date " ???
it actually shows a future date - September 26, 2009.
This is the method we use to keep the question 'stickied.' It's applied in javascript, so you'll see the old date for a bit until the javascript fully loads, then it makes the change.
That said, I wouldn't mind trying to either speed this process up or making it seemless--we get curious emails about it now and then.
