Mazda is going to be more reliable, but BMW more swank.

• After reading the answer, I realized I could have been more specific in what I was asking for. For "citing references", I was expecting more sources than just pointing to a single webpage on Edmunds -- I was expecting multiple sources to corroborate your recommendation.

Depends on what you mean by "best". And you're better off looking at this as one price group with a cap of $5k and get the lowest mile car that has the best maintenance record. Two main ways of looking at this: Reliability:
1. Toyota Camry
2. Honda Accord
3. Honda Civic
