Does anyone own a 2000-2005 Mercedes? Was it garbage?
By garbage, I mean far less reliable than one would expect a Kia to be. I'm looking at a used Mercedes E55, but I'm seeing a lot of very angry former 2000-2005 (all models) Mercedes customers on the Internet . I have a Saab, which is a crap car, but usually it is 6 months between dealer visits and $2000 bills, which I can handle. But not every month, as seems to be the case with even low-mile Mercedes cars. What was your experience?

From what I've heard, mainly from watching Top Gear, build quality on Mercedes, during the time you mention, was very poor. Things broke, a lot. Buttons and switches, seats and door mirrors, gadgets and instrumentation were known to be cheaply made and prone to very short lifespans. And customer service was generally bad as well.
So I'm not surprised that you're having trouble.
I've heard they have tried to improve things.
This is not based on personal experience, but it seems to be a widely held opinion.
