First of all, you need to make sure the latest software has been installed for your iPhone. Also, make sure your iPhone is fully charged.
If you can re-sync the contents (and have backup copies) of your e-mail, you might try to delete the 3 mailboxes and recreate them.
If it still not working, you need to follow the troubleshooting steps as suggested by this link
http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/troubleshooting/phone/
The last two steps of the troubleshooting outlined above are: Reset Settings and Restore.
For Reset Settings: you can either Reset All Settings (no data or media will be deleted) or Erase All Contents and Settings (this would delete media, data and settings).
Hopefully by performing Reset Settings, it'd fix your mailbox screen close issue.

Mahalo is adding a tip to all questions that don't offer a tip.
When my iphone is searching for new mail or downloading new mail, it suddenly closes the mailbox screen and returns to the home page
This is something that has suddenly started happening after it worked fine for a couple of years. I have tried 'reset' and also completely re-installed via iTunes, but it continues to happen. Would appreciate any assistance. I have 3 mailboxes and it is happening on all 3. Thanks in advance for any help. Martin

Many thanks for the very comprehensive answer.
Unfortunately, I tried all of these steps before writing this request for assistance as I just cannot find any other options. Anyhow, I tried the reset and restore again and it's still happening. Maybe somebody else has had the same problem and was able to find a solution? Thanks again for your help.
