Quantum dots are semiconductors on a nanoparticle scale; they combine the electrical properties of semiconductors with the unique physical properties of nanoparticles. For example, the conduction bandgap of bulk semiconductor material is fixed, while quantum dots can be "tuned" to various bandgap energies by changing the dot size (about 10-50 atoms in diameter).
Some of the current uses of quantum dots include white-light LEDs, printed electronic, and biomolecular probes.
