As a professional humorologist here on Mahalo, I would have to agree with you.

I find that there is a delicate balance with humor in advertising and if done correctly, it will attract an audience much more than just a simple announcement can.

There are many comedians out there, but only a few that can make a large part of the population laugh.
The same mathematics apply to humor in advertising.
If you make the masses laugh, you have a very successful ad.

This has worked both in print and in commercials. Humor helps to let your guard down. It also creates a very small level of intimacy between the viewer and the ad.

If a commercial's humor is balanced correctly, it can also mix some interesting social issues and still have a hit!
