The actual number of all Wal-Mart stores in Brazil is 348. Today, the company has announced a US $809 million investment to open 90 new stores in the country. Will hire 10.000 more employees that will add to the 7.000 hired in 2008.

Although many international stores bear the name Walt-Mart, the company also uses other 60 brands, usually the chain stores it acquires. In Brazil, a market Walt-Mart entered in 1995, it is now building small discount stores aimed for the emerging middle class, but without the name Walt-Mart. This is the reason why Wal-Mart has so many stores in that country.

According to "www.tormo.pe" on the August 14, 2009, Spanish speaking article "Wal-Mart anuncia inversión en Brasil" (Wal-Mart announces investment in Brazil):

La inversión de Wal-Mart este año en Brasil se destinará en parte a la apertura de 90 tiendas, que se sumarán a su actual red de 348 locales. En relación con el personal, las nuevas tiendas demandarán la contratación de otros 10,000 empleados este año, luego de los 7,000 puestos abiertos en el 2008. “Tendremos un buen año”, estimó Núñez.

The 3.700 Wal-Mart stores is a correct global figure (the exact number is 3.650) .... but for its international division of stores all over the world, no for Brazil.

According to "www.lanacion.com.ar" on the August 14, 2009, Argentinean article "Wal-Mart aprende que para ser global tiene que adaptarse a los gustos locales" (Wal-Mart learns that in order to become global it must adapt to the local habits):

La división internacional de Wal-Mart tiene más de 3.650 locales...

They have opened 2 Supercenters and 3 Sams clubs so far. However they did purchase 118 Bompreço stores in 2004 and 140 Sonae stores in late 2005.

They operate about 3100 stores in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom not counting the 4100 in the United States alone.
