Based on the most recent report I could find, 87% of the shrimp supply in the US was imported in 2003 (around 505,000 metric tons) , which leaves the remaining 13% (roughly 75,000 metric tons) as the number of shrimps grown in the US.

The huge reliance on imports can be attributed to vastly rising demand for shrimp in the US (shrimp is the most popular seafood in the US , making up around 20% of total seafood consumption) and the falling price of shrimp which is hindering US shrimp farmers
