Best experience I have had was going head first into starting a business. I realized you really can not spend too much time thinking about it, but spend more time doing about it.

If you want insight, you may want to work for a business that is related to the business that you want to start.

If you want further info, I know there is an abundance of literature available to read on starting a business.

One of the best tips I have taken from starting a business, is to immediately apply the information that you have obtained. If you wait and try to read or understand everything before starting a business, most the time people dont get started.

What books gave you the best insight into running your own business?

Did you find the authors helped you avoid mistakes?

How important was cashflow in measuring the success or failure of your business?

I have big list of books, but its taking a little from each is what really helped.
Not every Author will have something you can agree about, and sometimes its not related to what you want to do.
I'd like to say its a cocktail mix of a business person's habits, traits, attitudes and ideas.
And as of now, years later, I have learned that my philosophy has changed in regards to what running a business means to me. It depends on what your initial understanding is, and what you perceive. Not everyone will start with the same style of business. Some questions you need to ask yourself, is do I want my business to run me? Do I want to run the business, or do you want someone to run the business for you? Whats going to be your involvement from startup? Do you have big ambitions, or do you prefer a small mom and pop style biz?

Authors have helped me avoid mistakes, and they have also explained my mistakes.

If you don't have cash flow, you don't have a business.

Books I have utilized in the past.
Art of the Deal - Donald Trump
Think and Grow Rich - Napolean Hill
4 Hour Workweek - Tim Ferriss
One Minute Millionaire - Robert Allen
Rich Dad/Poor Dad - Robert Kiyosaki

I liked "Think and Grow Rich". Pay yourself 10% and in 30 years, you will be rich.
