First off, welcome to Mahalo. To make money on Mahalo you'll need to earn Mahalo Dollars.

A great introduction to Mahalo Dollars can be found here - How Mahalo Payments Work - this explains exactly what the Mahalo Dollar is and how it can be converted into your local currency.

So you'll need to collect some Mahalo Dollars. There are three main ways in doing that.
A) Completing a writing task found within Mahalo Tasks
B) Receiving a best answer on question within Mahalo Answers.
C) Becoming a page manager, successfully attracting advertising revenue.

Just participate! I´m a newbie too and it was a bit confusing in the beginning, but just answering questions and asking 2 questions every day and then a bit of browsing soon gets you a few points and dollars. Have fun!
