Just a guess, but I assume dealerships have high overhead. Rent, employees, security.

Each dealership must sell a certain number of cars in a year to make all that profitable.

Clearly, it's important for drivers to test-drive a car and perhaps check out its internals, but tons of cars are sold successfully over eBay & Craigslist (where I sold my car) so there are alternative models that have already been proven.
