Unfortunately, the only legal method of trademarking an item is to register with the Patent and Trademark Office. It's expensive because the PTO propagates your trademark throughout all the governmental trademark offices in the world. You also have to legally prove that you created the trademark, and you're not just taking it from somebody else. Sorry about the negative answer, but you deserve the news even if it's bad news.
