does algorithmic trading work?

I am considering investing using software to make buy/sell decisions. It removes emotions out of trading and strategies can be tested on historical data. My question is: Does it really work? Are there any articles or testimonials of people on this?

From what I can tell from the readings, you can be successful with algo trading if you have access to a supercomputer, because so many traders including hedge funds are using this system that the time to complete the transaction becomes critical. It is interesting that some of those using this method were Bear Sterns, Lehman, Citi, AIG and others who have almost disappeared.
