Do men carry briefcases anymore? Are they completely old fashioned now?

I'm considering getting my boyfriend a briefcase as a gift, as he starts a new job. Do men even carry briefcases anymore? I feel like I don't see them very often. If briefcases are out of fashion, has there been some sort of replacement? Is there some sort of bag now, or do people just put their papers into those zip-up portfolio things now?

Breifcases have lost market share to the messenger bag and laptop backpacks.

You cannot get on a plane without seeing several people with a swiss gear laptop backpack.

If any business travel is required = Laptop backpack
