I don't think you can run a successful business over the long term if you never hear from your employees or your shareholders about how you are doing. Every employee, from the CEO down to the mailroom guy, needs to hear feedback.

Nobody is perfect at his/her job. That means that everybody does something wrong. And if they never hear about it, how would they know about the problems, and how would they fix them?

It is vital for everybody to hear criticism. A CEO who only employs yes-men will ultimately suffer the consequences of never hearing what is going wrong.
Asker's Rating:
• I like your sense of urgency. The fact remains, getting feedback takes skill. Feedback helps managers know, if something is broken. Getting feedback takes more skill than dealing with it. Maybe, the CEO doesn't need to change his behavior. Maybe, he needs an expert consultant to help him understand, why there is a disconnect between employee and manager. Perception differences can cause fustration even with the most personable managers.

No. You cannot manage without feedback.

Feedback is very personal you need to figure out what works best for you. Weekly meetings with your heads, daily emails, ...

Lots of things can be used.

Can you? Is it possible? Sure. Yes. I can't conclusively say that it would be impossible to be successful without feedback.

Can I say that it would be harder? Absolutely! I think getting feedback, and modifying strategies as a result of other people's input is a great thing. If you have a super strong vision and know exactly what it is you are trying to accomplish, you may have to choose to ignore some feedback, because people may not see all the same vision that you have...
