My experience is that for a small business, there are typically many well-priced, smaller IT solution companies. They are typically created by former, long term corporate IT workers. Common practices include having a store front, working on computers owned by individuals, doing "house-calls," often on contract for larger IT support companies, and providing competent small business solutions.
They will have virtual support so they can immediately access any of your desktops or peripherals if your staff experiences problems. For difficult challenges, they will come on site.
Hardware is typically stored at your site, unless you are hosting websites on their servers. These days, most tasks can be done virtually, even with hardware (using "integrated lights out" systems to virtually press the power buttons), but if a server goes down, you should get someone geographically close that can swap out parts and take responsibility.
MaxNet Limited is a solutions company in London.
NetStar is another support company in London.
InfraSup is yet another support company in London.
All of them offer similar services.
I'd imagine getting a company outside of your area would be necessary only if you had an epic technology growth plan. You would most likely get more personable support from a local company, and you can strangle them in person if they make mistakes.
Prices are generally far less when using outsourced, local solutions firms. My former company charged $75 per workstation per month. This is less than one hour of billed service (typically $90) and comes with unlimited support. I believe they charged $115 per server. Seriously, this is chump change compared to paying an IT staff.
Some larger support companies are Cable and Wireless in India and SAVVIS in the United States.

Rob, I'm not sure EXACTLY what you/andy need done, but these guys have always been good to us.

My company used them for the <-snip-> project which included outlook plugins and graphics enhancements to existing drivers.
They are very flexible and very enthusiastic, i think enthusiasm right now is exactly what we all need.
I'm sure they would be willing to have some flexibility given your local.
Kind Regards,
XDS
ps: they have also been around a while now.

The only thing we really have issues with outside of that is printers, our internet connection and specific software. As a result of this we basically have staffers pitch in to figure things out when there is a problem.
I think for a small business under 100 you don't need IT if you have Macs and Google Apps.

Can anyone recommend a good company to outsource all small business I.T. tasks to?
Andy Evans of netcommunities.com is currently outsourcing all of his Information Technology services to virtualit.biz/ and is looking for a change.
What are some local, general I.T. outsourcing companies in London that can replce Virtualit? Reviews, testimonials, first hand experience or any other reccomendation of service would be very helpful.
As an alternative, can Andy's company of 13 people rely on outsourced labour that isn't physically located in London? If so, how?

Big consulting companies like Accenture, TCS, Infotech, IBM and Wipro are the best bets for outsourcing. We like ciber and have used them a lot.

We use Google Apps and Macs and we have 95% of our IT taken care of. We keep spare Macs around so if someone's Mac has problem we move them to a new one and reformat the OS on the one with the problem. The only thing we really have issues with outside of that is printers, our internet connection and specific software. As a result of this we basically have staffers pitch in to figure things out when there is a problem.
