One big but often overlooked area of restructuring IT systems is data-loss. At my high school our IT technician thought it was a good idea to change over to a new central file-store server, but somehow managed to fry a hard drive in the process, losing quite a lot of data!

Luckily he wasn't as thick in his backup strategies, so a lot of the data was recovered - but this did have a huge backlash.

Basically - try to make the process as invisible to the end users as possible. Do repairs over weekends and at times when people won't be needing access to systems - and make sure all data is backed up before you start!
Asker's Rating:
• Great story. High availability and data storage has becoming popular. Companies can't afford to lose their data.
