Why does Amazon.co.uk charge VAT when books bear no UK VAT?Why did Amazon reject my Spanish shipping address for an order from a US seller?
I have ordered a book from a UK bookseller through amazon.co.uk which has added a VAT charge when (1) there is no VAT levied on new books in the UK, let alone (2) on used ones. Is this legal? Secondly, I tried to order a new book at a discounted price offered by a US bookseller through amazon.co.uk which without further explanation simply kept on sending me a message saying it could not deliver it to my shipping addresses in Spain where I live; why might it do this?

Amazon has a team of legal experts who know what they can and can't do. If they charged you a VAT, it was legal. Doesn't seem fair, but probably covered by some fine print.
The seller who couldn't deliver to Spain probably indicated that they don't ship there. Sometimes filling out a customs form is not worth the money they make on the book. Bummer, huh?
